Even and odd trick

You will need

Five cards with the even numbers 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 written in blue on the front and the odd numbers 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 written in red on the back.

Step 1

Place the five cards on the table as shown in front of your friend or family member.

Step 2

Close your eyes or turn away and ask the other person to turn over some or all of the cards. It is entirely up to them. Now they just need to tell you how many red numbers they can see.

At this stage you can make a big deal about pretending to do some complicated maths in your head before you come up with a number. Tell them that the number you have calculated is the total of all the cards showing. Remember, you can’t see the cards, so how could you possibly know?

Step 3

Well, all you need to do is add 20 to the number of red cards that they told you they could see.

So, for example, if your player says they can see 3 red cards, the total of all the cards will be 20 + 3 = 23.

If they say they can see 5 red cards, the total will be 25.
